Presidents Hill

PRESIDENTS HILL
Building an Annapolis Neighborhood 1664-2005
Written by Michael P. Parker

ISBN 1-884878-17-2

The most intensive study ever undertaken of a neighborhood in Annapolis, and perhaps in Maryland.

Presidents Hill: Building an Annapolis Neighborhood, 1664-2005 traces the growth of one of Annapolis' most vibrant neighborhoods from the original land grants through its history as home to three of the city's most prominent families to its development as a residential neighborhood at the turn of the twentieth century. Parker's lively narrative places the residents of Presidents Hill in the broader context of West Street and Annapolis as a whole. He explores issues such as the Temperance Movement, the emergence of the Ku Klux Klan, the two World Wars, the saga of Kathy Lee Gifford's grandfather, and the tempestuous political career of Senator Louis Phipps against the background of the vanished customs of everyday life; the Annapolis rituals of birth and death; the growth of municipal services such as roads, water, and fire protection; and the unforgettable personalities of residents such as Harry Elliott, Doc Snyder, Buddy Levy, and Elsie Clark. With over 100 photographs and a wealth of anecdotes that have never before appeared in print, Parker's volume is a "must-have" for every Annapolis bookshelf.

Gone to Market: The Annapolis Market House Ginger Doyel
Gone to Market: The Annapolis Market House, 1698-2005
by Ginger Doyel

ISBN: 0-9771704-0-3
Hardback, 176 pages, over 100 photographs and illustrations

For over three centuries, the market house has been among Annapolis's most cherished—and controversial—landmarks. It's been a gathering place, where people of all backgrounds have come to eat, visit with friends, exchange goods, news, and ideas, and yes, even to exercise when part of it was a gym.

Gone to Market chronicles the market's history. However, as the author notes in her Foreword, “the market's story isn't simply a tale about a building.” Rather, it offers insight into many of the larger trends that have defined Annapolis (and in some cases, America) since the 17 th century—trends in politics, population, preservation, transportation, activism, agriculture, law, land use, women's roles, the cost and pace of living, and race relations.

The book features surprising stories, such as how the market survived City Council's attempt to demolish it three times in the mid-20 th century (to make room for a USO center for “white servicemen,” a high-rise commercial building, and a parking lot); it contains never-before published photographs, including one of Ella Burtis, the City's longtime Market Mistress who was fired in 1939 because of her gender; and it includes compelling interviews with Annapolitans whose families have “gone to market” for generations. It concludes by describing the ongoing controversy surrounding the market, city officials, and the New York-based gourmet grocer, Dean & DeLuca.

Bringing Back the Bay

Bringing Back the Bay
The Chesapeake in the Photographs of Marion E. Warren and the Voices of Its People
By Marion E. Warren
with Mame Warren
256 pages; 258 photographs
9 1/4" X 12 1/4" case bound with dust jacket
ISBN 1-884878-12-1

"Bringing Back the Bay is, I think, three books in one. For those who simply want a handsome picture book, it is here, though there also are some harsh images of threatened aspects of the Chesapeake. It also presents an opportunity to become better acquainted with the people who live and work by the Bay through images that illustrate pride in their labor and their heritage, even as their words convey concern for the future of the Bay. And for those who want to know more about the man behind the camera, Marion Warren's own thoughts introduce us to the mind of a master photographer – an artist devoted to his profession, and his subject."

Maryland Time Exposures
Maryland Time Exposures
1840-1940

ISBN 0-8018-24596-6
XXVI; 334 pages; Casebound

Special times are everyday moments, a century of American life is recaptured in Maryland Time Exposures, an incomparable collection of nearly 600 vintage photographs.

Public events and private moments pass before our eyes. Soldiers wander Antietam Battlefield in the aftermath of the bloodiest single day of the Civil War. Waves of immigrants arrive at Baltimore's Locust Point. The Wright Brothers race a train with aeroplane. Marylanders visit the shore, attend church socials, leave on wedding trips, go to amusement parks ("Take a 5c chance and win a $1 pair of Onyx silk hosiery").

Moments captured from family albums bear such haunting captions as "my family as it was for a time last summer." Forgotten details of work and play reemerge with startling clarity. Laborers lay railroad tracks and fire trains, till the land and gather berries, dredge for oysters and pick crabmeat. We see shipbuilders and sausage makers, streetcorner vendors and school teachers–and photographers, at work in their studies or along roads, casting the images of the Maryland of their time.

THE TRAIN'S DONE BEEN AND GONE
An Annapolis Portrait 1859-1910

ISBN 0-9606060-0-9

A Photographic Collection by Marion E. Warren and Mame Warren

Imagination often romanticizes our sense of the past, whether the memories are our own or those gleaned form tradition or textbooks. For better for worse, photography enables us to remember with a more factual perspective the way life has been since the invention of the camera. We are now able to participate, at least visually, in life as it actually was over one hundred years ago.

This portrait of Annapolis between 1859 and 1910, the years of the earliest known photograph to the arrival of the automobile, is presented as a pictorial narrative, not only of a city, but also of an era. While the immediate subject is Annapolis, and the characteristics which make the city a unique urban district are stressed, an overwhelming sense of universality prevails.

These photographs are, for the most part, the work of professional or gifted photographers. The very earliest views are by C. H. Hopkins, a set of stereopticons illustrating an almost complete panorama from the State House dome.
